WHAT IS THE BOTTLED-IN-BOND ACT?

Prior to the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, distilleries were using just about anything to flavor bottles of bourbon or whiskey. Flavoring means you can spend less money and time “fixing” a bad spirit instead of just making a great spirit the first time.

Led by quality distillers, it was government intervention that lead to better practices, better spirits, and a tax incentive for distilleries that met the requirements.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

  • Bottled at 100 Proof (50% ABV)

  • Aged in a bonded facility for at least 4 years

  • Label must identify where it was distilled and bottled

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR BOURBON TODAY?

It means better products! While the stamp of Bottled-in-Bond is no longer a requirement, transparency on labels is. Products issued the Bottled-in-Bond name must meet the requirements, and with more attention comes more care in spirits production overall.

 

WHY AREN’T ALL BOURBON’S BOTTLED-IN-BOND?

One of the requirements of B.I.B is the bottled product must come from one distilling season. That means something distilled one year, can’t be blended with something made the following year. Some bourbons don’t require the full four years to be enjoyable, and some warehouses aren’t recognized as government bonded! In short, it’s good to have both!

WHY DOESN’T EVERYONE DO A BOTTLED-IN-BOND?

Bottled-in-Bond is a commitment beyond your current production. To follow the requirements means a closer eye, interest, and expertise above your day-to-day. Those practicing and sharing Bottled-in-Bond spirits show themselves as a cut above the rest.
